Associates and Sisters gathered on February 10th to enrich their Lenten prayer experiences. Four presenters explained how their ministries and rituals can be used as we prepare for Easter. Sr. Dianne Kaimann gave us a brief history of icons that included her background of learning to write icons and pray with them. She brought some of her icons for us to reflect upon and several of her icons are displayed in the glass cases on the first floor of the Motherhouse.
Associate Phil Deardorff talked about his woodworking he has enjoyed since his retirement. He allows the Holy Spirit to guide him into helping a piece of wood become what God wants it to be. Phil drew names giving some participants one of his bee houses and several ornaments he carved.
The CEO of the Passionist Earth and Spirit Center, Kyle Kramer’s message to us was our obligation to care for all of creation and that everything is holy. We can connect to nature, each other, and God in a more compassionate way through mindfulness, contemplation, creativity, and rituals.
Yogi Wess, an Associate, gave us an overview of LBFE (Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly) as an organization and as the source for her ministry for over 27 years. She and her husband Randy founded LBFE in Cincinnati and since then she worked to provide transportation, meals, and social opportunities to those who needed assistance, or a friendly presence in their lives. As she remembered people who left an impression on her and in her heart, we felt like we knew them and could understand how meaningful this outreach could be to her.

2023 Pancake breakfast
The Associates prepared a delicious pancake breakfast for Sisters and Associates Saturday morning, November 4th. An annual tradition at the Motherhouse, guests enjoyed good food and good company. The meal provided an opportunity for everyone to spend a leisurely morning catching up with old friends and meeting new ones.
The weather cooperated beautifully for the Fireside Chat/ Embers of Grace Prayer Day for Associates and Sisters.
On Friday, September 29th (2023) we gathered on the patio outside St. Clare Hall to reflect on the Elements of Fire beginning with the blessing of our own “camp-side” fire. We created individual burn lists after reflecting on events or feelings we wanted to purge, wrote poems, and shared our experiences of fire. Our enjoyment of the flames continued when we roasted hot dogs for lunch and made s’mores for dessert. After lunch we continued our prayer time by adding different colors of sand to a candle that represented specific traits and gifts we would like to share with others.

On Sunday, August 13 (2023), before the 9:30 mass, the Associate Jubilarians were recognized and those present were graced with the Blessing of St. Clare from Associates and Sisters.
We congratulate and welcome: Gay Lynn Crossley, Sarah Will, and Patty Zartman who made their Associate commitments and received their Associate pins from their contact persons. They agreed to participate in the mission and charism of the Sisters of St. Francis through their individual callings and life circumstances. Everyone continued to celebrate over a meal following the prayer service.
Each year sisters and associates are invited to bring a guest to join us in prayer, discussion, activities, and a meal. The Share and Connect Prayer Day on Sunday, May 21, 2023 began with mass in the Chapel and then 30 participants gathered in ICA Hall to explore what it means to participate in daily life with intention, gratitude, and mindfulness. Maureen Pisani shared ways to help us be fully attentive to the people and experiences that grace our lives. She explained how our mind evolves as it develops consciously and subconsciously. Through a mindful activity of painting a birdhouse we had the opportunity to focus on what was in front of us as we quieted our thoughts.
The Brat Fry on April 29, 2023 at IGA was a successful fundraiser, and FUN raiser!
Associates enjoyed cooking and serving brats, hamburgers, metts, and hot dogs from 11:00 until 6:00. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet our neighbors and to get to know each other a little better. The Mystery Cup game provided fun for young and old, with over 30 gift card winners. We are looking forward to repeating the fry next year.
A special thank you to the sisters for sharing their grills, all who donated gift cards, and an anonymous donor whose generosity allowed us to purchase the large canopy, keeping us dry and shaded.

Associates and Sisters have been, “saving the date” for a year and celebrated the Associates 40th anniversary on August 19-21 (2022) at the Motherhouse. Associates and Sisters received a warm welcome and invitation to celebrate by the Associate Co-Directors at the opening prayer service on Friday evening. After the history of the Associate relationship was shared, the Associates who made their commitment 40 years ago were recognized and gifted. The ice-cream social that followed the prayer service was a much appreciated opportunity to become reacquainted with old friends and an opportunity to make new friends.
More guests arrived on Saturday and were able to choose from a variety of activities that included card making, jewelry making, scavenger hunt, and Bingo. Personal experiences were shared by a panel of Sisters and Associates providing a wonderful insight into the early years of Association. The afternoon even included a tour of the recently renovated Mortuary Chapel. After a delicious catered supper, the day concluded with a wine and cheese social that included music and singing with Virginia Gilbert on the keyboard. Photos of associates and sisters through the years were shown through the use of a continuously running power point and archived items were on display. Sunday’s mass was Lifting Up Our Hearts to the Lord in praise of the gifts we have in each other and for the Franciscan charism. Two women, Myrna Hoeing and Amy Moffitt made their associate commitment and received a pendant of the Tau Cross. Associates Patricia Nosko and Yvonne Dye made their Associate commitment permanent, an option for Associates who have been Associates for at least six years. Jubilarians celebrating 40, 25 and 15 years received the Blessing of St. Clare, a traditional Franciscan blessing song. After the upbeat closing song and lunch, a concluding prayer service began with a procession of luminaries, setting the tone for prayers and songs of gratitude for our gifts from God and our appreciation of Saint Francis, Saint Clare, the Oldenburg Franciscan Sisters and Associates. |
Seeds of God’s Love was the theme for a day of prayer on May 21st (2022). Sisters, Associates, and their guests gathered in Oldenburg for prayer and discussions that focused on how we live our lives as soil for God to plant and ways we help others grow spiritually.
Meditations, stories, and journaling provided methods to consider how we nurture ourselves as vessels of God’s seeds for our personal growth. Participants planted flower seeds to take home and have already shared their excitement over the newly sprouted seedlings!

PRAYING THE MOMENT...
On April 23rd, Associates gathered at the Franciscan Monastery of St. Clare in Cincinnati. It was a beautiful sunny day to enjoy readings, prayers, and discussion that centered on the theme, “Praying the Moment.” There was time to spend in the chapel or outdoors to just BE in the moment or reflect on the story, “A Perfect heart,” or a timely reflection by Marcia Gaddis. The group agreed that it was spiritually uplifting to finally be able to gather in person as well as to have an opportunity for personal reflection and growth. |

The Journey Toward Interdependence
The Associate Advisory Board of the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg, IN would like to share an article by Jeanne Connolly. Jeanne Connolly has been a covenant companion (or associate) with the Wheaton Franciscans in Wheaton, Illinois, for more than 22 years, and has served as their director of charism and mission since 2007. Jeanne is currently the President of the NACAR (North American Conference of Associates and Religious) Board. The article was published in the Global Sisters Report in March and is her reflection on the, “Journey Toward Interdependence,” as it relates to the associate-religious relationship. This article was discussed during a Board meeting and brings out some excellent observations about the opportunities present for Associates and sisters to “be” for one another. Many of her reflections could be a starting point for conversations about the growth and future of this relationship. Please click here of her article: Jeanne Connolly Global Sisters Report. |

Drive-by, Honk, and Wave Parade
A “Drive-by, Honk, and Wave” parade, conducted by the Associates of the Sisters of St. Francis, took place on Saturday, June 20, to honor and cheer the Sisters at their Motherhouse in Oldenburg. With cars and trucks decked out in colorful decorations including balloons, flowers, flags, streamers, and signs, the parade wound its way around the convent grounds greeting all the Sisters who came outside to see it. The Sisters were seen smiling ear to ear, waving, and holding signs expressing their love and gratitude. The nuns have been on lock-down since the middle of March due to COVID-19, so it was a joyous occasion for them to see their Associates and off-campus Sisters and vice-versa. Associates Alice Beresford, Betsy Savare, Linda Hilsinger, and Sister Patti Zureick were instrumental in planning and organizing this successful event. Associates are affiliated with the Sisters of St Francis in their mission and prayer, and share their spiritual, social, and service opportunities. The Associate relationship is rooted in the Gospel and in Franciscan values, mindful of the call to be the presence of Jesus to all, especially to the powerless, the poor, and the oppressed. After a break of hot chocolate and a s’mores dessert the theme moved to reflecting on the month of November as a time of thanksgiving and gratitude. |

An Early Nod to St. Patrick
The Damiano Associate Group had an early surprise for the Sisters at the Motherhouse on March 3, 2019. They held a St. Patrick’s Day sing-a-long in the Sisters’ dining room. The party was early because of all the meetings and a retreat crowding around the holiday. Sisters gathered and sang songs of a wide variety including those old Irish favorites. In addition to singing there was the now infamous “potato chip game.” A variety of local brands of potato chips were served and the Sisters had to determine if they actually tasted different from one another. Some were even brave and guessed the brands. Potato chip aficionados abounded. Not to be outdone by the potato chip sharing, the Damianos served cookies to both the Sisters in the dining room and the Sisters in St. Clare Hall who were unable to attend. Thanks to the Associates’ enthusiasm, it was indeed a celebration of green and a fond tradition! |
