1st Reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16
Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 146:7, 8-9, 9-10
Second Reading: Hebrews 9:24-28
Gospel: Mark 12:38-44
Today’s readings remind us about the total self-giving and total surrender that is required to be in communion with God. We hear two stories about total self-giving and surrender: the widow in the first reading and the widow in the Gospel. Both of these women have few possessions, yet they are willing to offer everything that they have with a deep trust in God. This total sacrifice mirrors Jesus’ total sacrifice of love. As we come closer to the Advent season and we remember the great gift of God making love known through the Incarnation, perhaps we can reflect on our willingness to make God’s love known through self-giving. How willing am I to offer what I have, no matter how small, to someone in need?
God of love, help me to have the courage to give totally of myself so that others may be able to see the total love you have for each of us.
