Reflection for Sunday, July 28, 2019

17th Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading:  Gn. 15: 20-32
Psalm Response: Ps. 138: 1-2
Second Reading: Col. 2: 12-14
Gospel: Lk. 11: 1-15

Today’s Gospel from Luke reminds us to serve each other.  The Gospel tells the story of a neighbor who was awakened at night to provide bread for his friend.  After one refusal the neighbor did supply bread.  He did this because he couldn’t refuse the other neighbor’s persistence and hopefully, because he knew it was the right thing to do.  How would you respond to a request from someone at an inconvenient time? What are we called to do for those we know… for those we don’t?

Prayer
Jesus was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord, teach us to pray just as John taught his disciples.”  He said to them, “When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come.  Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us, and do not subject us to the final test.”  Help us to be aware of your compassionate love toward us and our neighbor.  May we gather strength from this prayer to serve them as you have called us to do.  Amen.
