First Reading: Malachi 3:1-4
Psalm Response: Psalm 24:7, 8, 9, 10
Second Reading: Hebrews 2:14-18
Gospel: Luke 2:22-40
“Lo, I am sending my messenger to prepare the way for me.” (Malachi 3:1) Sounds like Advent but we are celebrating the Presentation of the Jesus in the Temple. “And suddenly there will come to the temple the Lord whom you seek and the messenger of the covenant who you desire.” (Malachi 3:2) God often sent messengers to let the people know of God’s unconditional covenant love for them and Jesus was the best messenger. Jesus is still the best messenger today.
In today’s gospel, we see Simeon, a righteous and devout man, and Anna, a prophetess. They were especially watching for the coming of that messenger. Imagine the excitement of Simeon as the Holy Spirit reveals to him that Jesus is the Christ who will be a light of revelation to the Gentiles and bring glory to the Jewish people. Imagine also Anna recognizing the Jesus is the one who will bring about the redemption of Jerusalem. She gives thanks to God and speaks in prophecy about the child.
Who has been a messenger of God’s love in your life? What was your response to the message?
Jesus, God’s messenger, help us to always be watching for your coming into our lives. We give you thanks for coming among us. Help us to understand your workings in our world. You are the one who is a light of revelation to the Gentiles. You are the one who brings your people to help us understand one another. May we always to be open to your coming among us. Amen.
