Reflection for Sunday, February 17, 2019

Sixth Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jer 17:5-8
Responsorial Psalm: 1:1-4,6
2nd Reading: 1 Cor 15:12,16-20
Gospel: Lk 6:17,20-26

Who do you trust? Isn’t it true that on our journey of life we meet people we can count on? We learn pretty quickly who to call upon in our various needs. Yes, “they are like trees planted near running water.” They are mirrors of God in whom we place all our trust.  Jesus promises that we are blessed; we will be filled with the presence of God and we will laugh even in the face of that which brings us pain or separation if we but trust in God.  With God we will be able to withstand the worst of times and we will see good triumph over that which is evil or harmful to us individually or as a nation, as a world.  Those “trees” will weather the storm and bear fruit, but we must do our part to bring blessing to those in trouble and summon up the courage to trust others and our God.  In that trust God is tangibly present.

Prayer
O God, I thank you for the people in my life I can call on when I am in need. I know they are evidence of the trust I can have in you. May I also be a mirror to others of your trust. And, most importantly, May I be worthy of your trust in me. Amen.
