First Reading: Isaiah 7:10-14
Psalm Response Psalm 24:1-6
Second Reading: Romans 1:1-7
Gospel: Matthew 1:18-24
“This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.” We are so familiar with this story that we may miss some of the most important messages. If you read the passage as if you are reading it for first time, you may notice that what it stresses is that the birth of Jesus is the work of the Holy Spirit. Mary was found to be with child of the Holy Spirit. That which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.
The Holy Spirit brought Jesus into the world with the wholehearted cooperation of Mary. Jesus is the one person who shows us what God is like and how God means for us to live. Before Jesus came people did not really know what goodness was. In Jesus we see true goodness, true obedience to the will of God and unconditional love.
Life is quite different when Jesus teaches us how to look at things. When Jesus comes into our hearts, he opens our eyes to see things truly.
Loving Jesus, thank you for coming to be with us on earth and showing us how we are to live and love. May your Holy Spirit help us to love like you love and open our eyes so we see you in the faces of all of our brothers and sisters.
