It may be winter all around us, but at Michaela Farm there is plenty of activity. We may not be plowing or harvesting, but winter is a time of sprucing up the place and making needed repairs now that there is a little breathing space. As we move deeper into the winter here at the Farm, we are moving ahead with normal work and repairs. Life here isn’t as exciting as it is during the growing season but we are just as busy. Repairing the tractor doesn’t bring quite the same reaction as seeing the new plants pushing up through the soil in the spring. We have ordered all the seeds for the garden and there is excitement in planning what the gardens will look like in a few months. In a few more weeks, potting up in the greenhouse will start and the Farm will start coming to life again.
Our chickens are still laying a good number of eggs every day. There are plenty available in all sizes in the Farm Store. The cold hasn’t affected their laying patterns, but they do have some heat and a heated water source so they are pretty happy in their new house. They do come outside for a while each day and get some sunshine and fresh air. We all could take a lesson from their behavior!
The farm store is open year round and we have plenty of eggs and winter products from the farm and the nearby area. Here is a sampling of what’s in the store now: eggs, dried herbs, local honey, herb infused oil (herbs from Michaela Farm), applesauce, apple cider jelly and apple butter (from Doll’s orchard down the road), potted Amaryllis and potted live herbs.
Feel free to check out the store dawn to dusk or come for a winter hide through the trails. You are always welcome here. Thanks again for all the ways you support us in our care of creation and the mission of the Sisters of St. Francis.
