S. Claire Whalen, Sister of St. Francis, Oldenburg, was honored during Earth Week by being named a Hoosier Resilience Hero by the Environmental Resilience Institute, a part of Indiana University’s Prepared for Environmental Changes Grand Challenge Initiative. The Initiative honored ten heroes who show leadership in working toward making a positive and direct environmental difference in the State of Indiana.
S. Claire was honored for her continuing work to make Indiana more environmentally responsible now and in the future. Much of her life has been dedicated to this cause. During the last two years, S. Claire has focused on getting homeowners and businesses in Oldenburg and surrounding areas in Southeastern Indiana to put up solar panels by her leadership in the Solarize Indiana Southeast. Thirty-five homes and businesses now take advantage of solar power and its benefits for them and the environment. Presently, S. Claire is working with the Oldenburg Renewable Energy Commission to help reduce the carbon footprint in the area in the next ten years. She has been both an advocate in helping sustain positive action regarding saving the environment and taking the lead in environmental concerns in Indiana and beyond. She is indeed a Hoosier Resilience Hero to us and to those who know her.
