Volunteer Program We depend on the support of many volunteers and community members to achieve our mission. Volunteers at Michaela Farm help us in many ways. No matter what your age, ability or skill level, we have a place for you. We welcome you to join us by volunteering your time, energy, ideas and spirit.
Volunteer Work Days: Organized work days are scheduled for the third Saturday of every month, March through November, from 9:00-3:00. The hands of many can accomplish much more than any one of us. It is a great way to get to know the farm and meet others. Call S. Carolyn for more information.
Volunteer in Residence: We welcome volunteers to live and work with us for a period of a few days up to two weeks, with extensions negotiable. Volunteers are asked to work a minimum of five hours per day in exchange for lodging. Meals and other expenses are the responsibility of the volunteer, although we will share the abundance of produce when available. Contact S. Carolyn to arrange your stay with us.
Individual or Group Service Project: Whether you are a high school or college student, scout or preparing for the Sacrament Confirmation you can fulfill your service requirements with us. Contact S. Carolyn to discuss the possibilities. See S. Carolyn to discuss possibilities.
Opportunities for Spiritual Growth Spiritual renewal is just as important here as natural farming practices production and ecological education. You can come for a private retreat using one of our rental facilities. you may also want to spend a few hours on the land walking the labyrinth or the trails. Benches are situated in a few optimal places on the grounds to enhance a state of BEING. Whenever you plan to come we appreciate notification. For safety purposes we need to know who is on the land.
Tours
Guided Tours: Guided tours may be scheduled with a staff person for a fee of $3.00 per person per hour. If your group has specific interests (i.e. horticulture, history, etc.) we can make the tour fit your needs.
Self Guided Tours: If you have been to the farm for a tour or orientation you may pick up a self guided tour map in the lower barn and do some of your own exploring. Remember to honor the private residences. We appreciate notification of your plans to visit. For safety purposes we need to know who is on the land.
Donor Tree Program Donate a tree to celebrate a birthday, anniversary, special holiday or to memorialize a deceased friend or relative. We will choose tree most needed on the farm and plant it at the appropriate time. A certificate will be mailed to you after you send in $50.00 per tree. You, the donor, will be notified after the tree is planted. We encourage you then to visit the farm, you can locate the tree by ID number and map in the main office. For more information call Sr. Carolyn Hoff at 812-933-0661 or email to michaelafarm@seidata.com.
Share the Bounty
Since 2002, Michaela Farm’s special “justice for the poor” effort has provided fresh produce for twenty weeks during the growing season to 10-15 families on limited incomes. Funds solicited from ministers and clergy in the local area through their ministerial associations and from private donors make it possible for the farm to offer shares of its vegetables grown using natural farming practices. Other groups collaborate to provide a cooking class component and a kitchen site for the class. In 2005, the cooking class will continue as structured in Brookville, but in the Batesville area it will be open to the general population, with a free-will offering requested to receive the vegetables distributed at the end of class. Another collaborative effort built into the 2005 program is the weekly purchase of vegetables grown by farmers who practice natural farming in addition to those grown here.
